A friend of Zacchaeus

Loosed based on:  Luke 19:1-10 - Zacchaeus

Hello!!

My name is Mehida.  Okay - you haven't heard of me (and in reality, my name is quasi made up - there is a Mehida in the Bible, but not here).

You see, I am (oops - was) a tax collector and a friend of Zacchaeus. For some strange reason (no, not a strange reason, God was calling out to Zacchaeus through the Holy Spirit), Zacchaeus stopped working early the day Jesus came to town.

As a tax collector, we had different areas.  Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector in our area.  He 'handled' the merchants, shops and major land owners.  He was very successful.  In our business, the Romans expected a certain amount, but all of us (or almost all of us) intimidated, harassed and cajoled people to pay a higher amount.  Some (like Zacchaeus) were very good at that - and also negotiated with the Romans for better (i.e. lower) rates.

For me, I was rising nicely in the establishment.  Yes, I was a Jew - but ... let's be honest ... other than some token following of Passover and some of the dietary rules, I was a pretty lax Jew.  My area was some of the smaller businesses and smaller farms in the area.  Basically, I got the acreages and businesses outside of town, so I had to walk more and maybe had less clout as I couldn't call on the Roman garrison as much.

Zacchaeus and the other tax collectors (including myself) frequently gathered at the inns and enjoyed too much wine.  He had a way of getting the best (and most potent) wines from the major vineyards.  These gatherings were almost like training sessions as Zacchaeus and others talked about how they had extorted larger amounts of tax amounts (and how they hid the amounts from the Romans).

So, when I heard that Zacchaeus had stopped working that day and gone to see Jesus, I was interested.  So, I followed him.  I had heard of Jesus - but had dismissed him as another Rabbi telling us to give to the poor, follow the Mosaic laws and tithe our earnings.  So, what was this that caused Zacchaeus to go here this Jesus guy.

You know the story, Zacchaeus is short, so he climbed a tree so he could see Jesus.  Somehow Jesus stopped and directly talked to Jesus - just like he KNEW what was in Zacchaeus' heart (and I believe he did KNOW what was in Zacchaeus' heart).  You know the scripture:  "“Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”  But, you don't know what he did next - he looked straight at me and say "And you too Mehida".  I could have melted on the spot.  Somehow (again, I think it was the Holy Spirit leading me along).

That day, my life changed.  After dinner (which was so personal and so deep - Jesus did look right through me), I went home and wept for hours.  In the morning, I went over my records.  I found the amounts that I had cheated people - and that day started back to my accounts to give the people refunds.  Some were so amazed and so grateful.  They asked 'why' and I got to talk about Jesus - and many of these followed Him as well.  Others were sceptical - "why are you doing this?  Are the Romans harassing you?"  There were five accounts that I couldn't settle as the account holder had died and the property changed hands.  The money from these accounts I quietly gave funds to various support groups - to widows, to orphans, and to the needy.

I stayed a tax collector for several years after that -but was known as the 'fair' tax collector.

After Jesus' resurrection, I was an active part of the early Christian movement.  I was jailed a few times for my beliefs.  Eventually I ended up in Asia Minor as an evangelist in my senior years.

My story illustrates that there were many of us 'lesser' people that were affected (and believed) by Jesus!!!

Starting out

Starting a new Bible oriented blog.
These might be completion of Bible stories and parables - or thoughts.
Let's see where this goes.

Mark 10:17-27
The Rich and the Kingdom of God
New International Version (NIV)
Mark 10:17-27
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[a]
20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said.“Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again,“Children, how hard it is[b] to enter the king

========================
Hi Readers, Peresh
The above is my story - or at least the start of my story.  Today, you are going to get the rest of the story.
My name is Peresh (note - this is a work of fiction - so the name comes from a website of Biblical names / places).  My family was very successful in Israel at the time of Jesus.  My father had several vineyards and olive farms.  My uncle ran a very successful import / export business (especially for exporting the family wines and olive oils).  I lacked for nothing.  With my uncle and his shipping business, I had visited Rome, Greece, and other places while a teenager.  This was my life.  But, my family also did well by me in that I learned the scriptures from my childhood.  I listened to the rabbis every Sabbath, I prayed daily, God was definitely part of my life.
When I heard of Jesus a spark grew within me - call it the "Hound of Heaven" or the Holy Spirit, and I needed to find this Jesus and listen to him.  I did find him and listened to him - what truth he taught, what joy filled my heart.  As you can see in the scripture above (verse 21) - Jesus looked at me and loved me.  But, alas, alack, I was blinded by my possessions.  When Jesus asked me to sell all that I had and give it to the poor, my brain said "no" (although my heart was yelling "yes").
I am now an old man.  About six weeks ago, a chance encounter with a poor man in the slums around Jerusalem caused me to think about this situation from so many years ago.  I realized how much I had been (and still was) a fool.  Quietly in the past six weeks, I have been selling off my possessions (which are (or ... correction - 'were') numerous) and giving the money to the poor.  I'm having food delivered to the slums (but it can not be traced back to me); one house where there are five young children without a father (who died in a construction accident) and the mother doesn't have the means to educate or cloth them has had an anonymous person stop by their door with food, clothing and money.  There are many ways I am quietly doing things to help the poor and to live the message that Jesus taught.
I'm so glad that God didn't abandon me.  Almost too many years too late, maybe I can live my life as God wants me to.  And ... I've been quietly showing up at these "Christian" meetings - wearing old clothes (as if anybody would recognize me as that young man from so many years ago).  Yes, my heart has been changed.  THANK YOU JESUS!!!
